During the Revolutionary War, George Washington outfitted his squadron of six schooners with this flag, commissioned at his own expense in the fall of 1775, hence the flag’s name, “Washington’s Cruisers”. Knowing they were up against a great military force they believed they were sustained by a higher power, thus their “APPEAL TO HEAVEN”.
